The massive headstock alone weighs more than the ENTIRE MILL that I use for jewelry does. You don't need that much of a spindle when an 1/8" mill is the tactical nuke of jewelers bits, and most work is done under .010" You do, however, need it to run much faster than an X2 spindle can handle. The picture shows the treadmill motor mounted. The controller, the venerable MC-60, is mounted on the benchtop behind the mill. I put the speed control pot in place of the origional fuse on the mill control panel. I added the aluminum panel to the right of the origional control panel for the power switch. The procedure is simple with a digital indicator. Swing your indicator to one side and zero it. Then swing it to the other side. If the measurement is "negative" then push the column toward that side half the distance shown on the indicator. If your measurement is "positive" then push the column away from that side half the distance shown.

A problem with the Sieg X2 mini-mill [ HF 44991, Grizzly G8689, Micro-Mark & others] is that the head can suddenly drop down while you're milling. Everything will seem fine until the head suddenly drops a bit, which causes the end mill to try to cut too much metal at once, causing the table to start shaking as much as the play in the gibs allows.
