I know the peddle should have 1/2" to 1" free travel as measured on the frame rail or you would adjust the rod. Pop the cap off, grab the rotor and see if you can move the main shaft side to side bout' 3-5 thousands. If so, main shaft and or bushings are worn. Time for a rebuilt. The 45's usually use the Delco 1111735 or 745 Distributor. Have both units rebuilt/exchange on the shelf ready to go if ya need one.

Posted: 17 May 2019 at 9:46pm. Just a big thanks to Steve at B&B for the hi-torque starter he built for my mildly modified WD 45 engine that I built for my 'ol WD. I had one rebuilt here at a local shop that does excellent work but it just wouldn't turn that engine over fast enough to start, especially in cold weather.

when the pulley is engaged into the gears and with the engine shut off & the foot clutch engaged, you want about 1/8 inch lash (movement) to compensate for the metal expansion when those gears heat up from the workload. Rotate the shaft to the proper hole that will give you the 1/8" lash. Also, engage the hand clutch when doing belt work with it.
New needle and seat, set float to 1/4" from gasket surface to float. 2. Cleaned all jets and passages. 3. New carburetor gaskets, manifold to carb gasket. 4. Cleaned fuel bowl, good flow to carburetor. 5. Block sanded both halved of carburetor to remove any warping in the cast iron.
